R.I.P. Slater Martin
Slater Martin led the University of Texas to a 26-2 record and a third-place finish in the 1947 NCAA basketball tournament.
Basketball Hall of Famer Slater Martin, a star guard from Jefferson Davis High School and the University of Texas who won five NBA championships in the 1950s, died Thursday in Houston. Martin was 86. Martin led Jeff Davis to state titles in 1942 and 1943, took Texas to the 1947 Final Four, and was a beloved figure in Houston for decades after his retirement while running the Slater Martin Golf Tournament and a restaurant, Slater Martin’s.
In 1982, he became the only former Longhorns player inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. An All-Star in seven of his 11 NBA seasons, Martin was the playmaker that drove the great Minneapolis Lakers teams to four NBA championships. He went into the University of Texas’ Longhorn Hall of Honor in 1962, entered the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1964, and the school retired his No. 15 in 2009.
